RELAXED PERFORMANCE OF THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
Thursday 5 November at 1.30pm in the Temporary Theatre, National Theatre
A Relaxed Performance of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, in a new version for younger audiences, will take place on Thursday 5 November at 1.30pm in the Temporary Theatre at the National Theatre.
Specifically designed to welcome people with a learning disability, Down’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Condition or sensory and communication disorders into the theatre, Relaxed Performances give those who otherwise might feel excluded from the chance to experience live performance.
A fast-paced and energetic re-telling of Shakespeare’s hilarious and moving farce, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, in a new version by Ben Power for young audiences, is directed by Bijan Sheibani and designed by Fly Davis.
In a city by the sea, two sets of identical twins seek each other amidst a riot of music and colour. Separated for many years, the brothers face comedic confusion, arrests, and multiple mistaken identities before a final joyful reunion.
Ben Power and Bijan Sheibani previously collaborated on a highly successful version of Romeo and Juliet for young audiences at the Temporary Theatre. Ben Power’s work for the NT also includes an adaptation of Ross Collins’ The Elephantom, while Bijan Sheibani’s previous work for the National includes Emil and the Detectives.
Relaxed Performances have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels. There is a relaxed attitude to audience noise and movement and some small changes made to the light and sound effects. Parts of the Temporary Theatre foyer will be available as a quiet space for those who need to leave and re-enter the auditorium during the show. After the performance, the audience will have the opportunity to stay to meet the actors who will be in costume but out of character. ‘Visual stories’, which give information about the theatre and the show, will be provided to all bookers to help support their visit.
The Comedy of Errors is supported by The Ingram Trust, Archie Sherman Charitable Trust, Behrens Foundation, Goldsmiths’ Company Charity, and Jill and David Leuw.
